2014 TRULLO RESTORATION WORKSHOP with Thea Alvin
FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP WITH PHOTOS
In September 2014, 17 people from 6 countries came together for 10 days of hands-on, experiential learning of the dry-stone construction typology called “trullo” that exists in the Valle d’Itria area of Puglia, Italy. This workshop was in collaboration with stone artist and mason Thea Alvin of My Earthwork, Master Craftsman Norman Haddow , local trullaro Mario Santoro, and sculptor Michael Clookey.
Students learned about the structural system of a trullo by constructing a new shepherd’s hut with stone sourced from the land. Students learned about the water-shedding system of a trullo by restoring the stone shingles of an existing trullo cone.
